What is a Root Canal?

Root canal service is a dental procedure that is performed when the pulp or the soft tissue inside the tooth becomes infected or inflamed. The procedure involves removing the damaged or infected tissue, cleaning the inside of the tooth, and sealing it to prevent further infection or damage.

A root canal service is typically recommended when the patient is experiencing severe tooth pain or sensitivity, swelling in the gums, or signs of infection such as a pimple on the gums or a bad taste in the mouth. Without treatment, an infected tooth can cause serious health problems, and may even require extraction.

The root canal service is a common procedure that is performed by a dentist or endodontist, and can usually be completed in one or two appointments. It is a highly effective way to save a damaged or infected tooth, and can help prevent the need for more extensive dental work in the future.

Tooth removal-procedure

The procedure is usually performed by a dentist or an endodontist, a specialist in treating
the inside of teeth. Here’s how a root canal procedure typically works:

Examination: The dentist examines the tooth and takes X-rays to determine the extent
of the damage or infection.

Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is used to numb the area around the affected tooth, ensuring
that the patient is comfortable during the procedure.

Access: The dentist creates an opening in the top of the tooth to gain access to the pulp chamber
and root canals.

Removal of pulp: The dentist uses special tools to remove the infected or damaged pulp tissue
from inside the tooth and root canals. The canals are then cleaned and disinfected.

Filling and sealing: After the canals are cleaned, they are filled with a rubber-like material
called gutta-percha, which seals the canals and prevents further infection. A temporary filling
is placed on top of the gutta-percha.

Restoration: A permanent restoration, such as a dental crown or filling, is placed on top of the
tooth to protect and restore its function.

The entire procedure may take one or more visits depending on the severity of the infection or damage.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The use of local anesthesia by the dentist who performs root canals should ensure that you experience minimal or no pain.

While infection is commonly the initial indicator, you may not experience any apparent symptoms. It is possible for your dentist to identify the damage during a regular check-up. However, you may observe some indications of diseased pulp, such as heightened or persistent sensitivity to heat, cold, or pressure, discoloration of the tooth, a sizable cavity, an unpleasant taste in your mouth despite brushing, pus draining into your mouth, and inflamed or tender lymph nodes.

Regrettably, the bacteria and infection have the potential to spread to other areas of your mouth, leading to the development of a dental abscess that necessitates immediate intervention.

The innermost layer of your tooth is called the tooth pulp, which consists of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissues that extend to the roots. The pulp is responsible for three essential functions, including sensing hot and cold, forming dentin (the hard secondary layer), and nourishing the tooth through blood vessels. Despite its numerous contributions to tooth health, the pulp is not indispensable for tooth survival, as the surrounding tissues can provide sufficient support.
