What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns, also known as caps, are prosthetic devices that are placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its shape, strength, and function. Crowns are custom-made to fit over the existing tooth and are permanently cemented in place by a dentist.

Crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, metal, or a combination of both. Porcelain crowns are often preferred for their natural-looking appearance and ability to match the color of surrounding teeth. Metal crowns, such as those made of gold or silver, are more durable and better suited for back teeth that experience more pressure when chewing.

Dental crowns are typically recommended in situations where a tooth is severely damaged, decayed, or weakened due to injury or previous dental work. Crowns can also be used to cover a dental implant or to support a dental bridge, which is used to replace one or more missing teeth.

With proper care, dental crowns can last for many years and help restore the appearance and function of a damaged or decayed tooth.

What Are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges are prosthetic devices used to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge consists of one or more artificial teeth, called pontics, that are anchored in place by crowns placed on the teeth adjacent to the gap.

Bridges are typically recommended in situations where one or more teeth are missing, and there are healthy teeth on either side of the gap. They are an alternative to dental implants or dentures and offer several advantages, including:

1.Restoring the ability to speak and chew properly: Missing teeth can make it difficult to speak and chew food properly, which can impact overall health and well-being. Bridges can help restore these functions and improve quality of life.

2.Maintaining facial structure: Missing teeth can cause the cheeks to sink in and make a person look older. Bridges can help maintain facial structure and prevent premature aging.

3.Preventing further tooth loss: When a tooth is missing, adjacent teeth can shift out of place, causing further dental problems. Bridges can help prevent this by keeping the remaining teeth in their proper position.

SALIENT FEATURES OF OUR DENTURES

At Home Dental Clinic, we understand the importance of having a comfortable and natural-looking dental crown or bridge procedure. That’s why our experienced cosmetic dentists use sedation dentistry to ensure our patients’ comfort during the process. To begin, we take an impression of your teeth to create a custom-made crown or bridge in a dental lab.

For dental crown installation, our team prepares the tooth by removing some enamel to make room for the new crown without affecting adjacent teeth. Then, we clean the tooth and attach a temporary crown using removable glue. You will wear the temporary crown for around two weeks while waiting for the permanent one to be created. During this period, we advise being cautious with your diet and brushing habits since the temporary crown can come off.

Once the crown or bridge is ready, you return to our office to have the temporary removed and the permanent one bonded to the tooth. For a dental crown, we secure the cap around the tooth, and the procedure is complete. With a bridge, we place a crown on the teeth on either side of the gap and attach a synthetic tooth in between. These two crowns serve as anchors for the bridge, restoring the functionality and natural appearance of the missing tooth. Our patients rely on this procedure to replace missing teeth and restore their confidence in their smile.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

At the dentist’s office, the crown procedure typically starts with an exam and bite impressions to determine the shape of your tooth and ensure a proper fit. It may take multiple appointments to obtain accurate measurements and cement the crown to your tooth. In some cases, the tooth may need to be reshaped to ensure the dental cap fits correctly.

We also provide same-day crowns using CEREC technology, which cuts down on the procedure time while delivering exceptional results.

It depends. Most crowns last for ten to fifteen years if you care for them well. Sometimes, crowns can even last a few decades.

Tooth decay can potentially form around the edges of a crown and spread underneath it. This happens when bacteria accumulates underneath the crown and flourishes due to inadequate oral hygiene.

Getting a dental bridge is generally not a painful experience, although certain stages of the process may cause minor and temporary sensitivity. To alleviate any discomfort, your dentist can administer a local anesthetic to numb the area during treatment.

After a tooth extraction, it is important to allow time for your gums to heal. Typically, it takes about five to six months for the gums to become stable enough to support a permanent bridge. During this healing period, your dentist may fit you with a temporary bridge or partial denture to ensure proper oral function and aesthetics.

Yes, it is possible to bridge front teeth.
