What is A Deep Cleaning?

Teeth deep cleaning is a dental procedure also known as scaling and root planing. It is a non-surgical treatment that is used to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth and gums, and to treat early stages of gum disease (gingivitis) or more advanced stages of gum disease (periodontitis).

During the procedure, the dentist or dental hygienist will use specialized tools to remove the buildup of plaque and tartar that has accumulated on the surface of the teeth and around the gum line. They will also smooth out rough spots on the tooth roots to remove any remaining bacteria and promote healing.

Which treatment method is best for you?

To begin with, a consultation is necessary to assess your suitability for a deep cleaning procedure. During the procedure, the dental hygienist will remove plaque and calculus buildup from the teeth and gums, as well as within the mouth. If the buildup is severe, root planning may be required to address bacterial accumulation around the root. To ensure comfort, a local anesthetic can be applied, and the hygienist will use scalers, ultrasonic cleaners, or lasers to remove tartar. The area is then cleaned with an antiseptic rinse and a topical antibiotic may be applied. Depending on the patient’s needs, the procedure may be carried out in two or four sessions across different areas of the mouth.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Although daily teeth cleaning at home is crucial for fighting tooth decay and gum disease, it’s inadequate to maintain overall oral health. Professional dental cleanings can remove plaque and tartar buildup, smoothen the tooth surfaces, and polish minor stains. Even with regular brushing and flossing, you may still experience buildup, leading to plaque that hardens into tartar. This buildup can cause inflammation and infections in the gums, affecting more than just your teeth. Gum disease has been associated with several health issues, such as diabetes and heart disease. By scheduling dental cleanings twice a year, your dental team can identify potential oral health concerns before they become severe. They can detect early signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and even oral cancer.

Using a small tool, dental hygienists remove calculus from your teeth. Once your teeth are free of any buildup, the hygienist polishes them with a special brush and paste to eliminate stains and create a smooth tooth surface.

To remove minor stains and make it harder for plaque to attach, your hygienists use a mildly abrasive toothpaste that also smooths the surface of your teeth.

Deep Cleaning is a dental procedure primarily intended for individuals with gum disease or periodontitis. When plaque and tartar accumulation reach an advanced stage, it can result in gum recession and bone loss. Neglecting this condition could eventually lead to tooth loss.
